چکیده

Maize is grown in large quantities for nutritional purpose; its agricultural by-product is the corn stover, which is usually unused. Because of its high abundance and high cellulose content, it is a promising substrate for biogas production. However, this cellulose-rich biomass is not used in anaerobic fermentors today, due to its insolubility. It forms a solid crust at the top of the liquid phase in the reactors, which results in the inhibition of biogas formation. Since the high solid-content inhibits the industrial-scale fermentation of corn stover, some kind of pretreatment is considered necessary. Therefore the anaerobic digestion of the corn stover could be an effective, economically profitable and environmentally friendly way of disposing agricultural wastes besides producing a valuable renewable biofuels. In our study, a cellulolytic bacterium has been used for the pretreatment of the cellulose-rich biomass and the impact on the anaerobic fermentation of the substrate was measured.

Ethanol and biogas production after steam pretreatment of corn stover with or without the addition of sulphuric acid

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Lignocellulosic biomass, such as corn stover, is a potential raw material for ethanol production. One step in the process of producing ethanol from lignocellulose is enzymatic hydrolysis, which produces fermentable sugars from carbohydrates present in the corn stover in the form of cellulose and hemicellulose. A pretreatment step is crucial to achieve efficient conversi...

Isolation and Biochemical Characterization of Anaerobic Bacteria Strains from Discarded Ruminal Contents of Nigerian Breed Cattle and Preliminary Evaluation of Its Suitability for Animal Feedstuff

Aim: The study aimed at isolation and preliminary characterization of anaerobic bacteria from a special crossbreed of Muturu and N’Dama cattle found in parts of Nigeria. Study Design: The work investigated the suitability of the isolates in in vitro fermentation of biomass and evaluated the relationship between the bacterial flora and their ability to hydrolyse lignocellulosic materials from co...

Effect of Extractives on Digestibility of Cellulose in Corn Stover with Liquid Hot Water Pretreatment

Many herbaceous lignocelluloses suitable for ethanol production have high extractives contents, such as some straws and corn stover. The high extractives content might affect pretreatment or enzymatic hydrolysis. In this study, extractives were removed from corn stover, and then extractives-free corn stover and ordinary corn stover were respectively pretreated using a liquid hot water (LHW) met...

Potential bioethanol and biogas production using lignocellulosic biomass from winter rye, oilseed rape and faba bean

To meet the increasing need for bioenergy several raw materials have to be considered for the production of e.g. bioethanol and biogas. In this study, three lignocellulosic raw materials were studied, i.e. (1) winter rye straw (Secale cereale L), (2) oilseed rape straw (Brassica napus L.) and (3) faba bean straw (Viciafaba L.). Their composition with regard to cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, ...
